Today in my Scene Design class, my professor joked about how he once used to draw in dragons and such in his designs in place of goons (basically, a figure representing a 6-foot tall person, so you have a frame of reference for the height of your designs). I said that I was going to make it a goal…

These are so strikingly contemporary, it’s really hard to believe they were painted over 100 years ago. I would believe it if you told me these were by some hot new indie artist. I remember a proffesor telling me that most design trends hit the general public thirty to fourty years after they’re created, ie the iconic “mod” furniture we associate with the 60’s was actually cutting edge avant garde in the early 1930s, the ultra-contemporary look of bare concrete interior walls and visible seems was experimental architecture in the 1950s, etc. Maybe that’s a hallmark of major cultural change: in historical hindsight, a piece of art that seems anachrinistic in it’s historical chronology. And I suspect that, unfortunatly, the true innovators are often ignored for the visionary who brings the style to the masses years later. Thoughts?
And what brilliant professor might have taught us such wisdom? hmmyess…
